Support a wind farm in the middle of coal country

August 19th, was the national launch for the Coal River Mountain Wind Project in West Virginia.

Residents of the Coal River Valley are proposing the development of a 440 Megawatt wind farm on Coal River Mountain as an economically viable alternative to a planned 6,000 acre - 10 square mile - Mountaintop Removal coal mining operation.  18 valleys and 10 miles of headwater streams will be saved from mountaintop removal by this proposed wind farm.  Mountaintop removal would permanently destroy the possibility of ever using these mountains for wind turbine development, since the best winds are at higher elevations.

This project is supported by Coal River Mountain Watch and the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, the Sierra Club, Appalachian Voices, Rainforest Action Network and Co-Op America.

Those living around Coal River Mountain are saying loud and clear that they reject Mountaintop Removal coal mining as an economic model, and are making the choice for clean, renewable energy and safe, long-term green jobs for their communities.

Take action:

1.    Sign the petition:  http://www.coalriverwind.org/?page_id=28

2.    Join us from 5:00-6:30pm on Tuesday, September 16th as we rally around the State Capitol in Charleston, WV.  This rally will celebrate and promote the development of wind power on Coal River Mountain.

3.    Call your congressional representatives and ask them to support the Clean Water Protection Act (H.R. 2169). To learn more, visit www.ilovemountains.org

, and while you're there take a look at the "America's Most Endangered Mountains" project to learn about other mountains and communities facing the threat of Mountaintop Removal coal mining.

4.  Member of the Media?  Download out "National Launch" Press Packet.  If you have any questions, contact Lorelei Scarbro at [address removed], or Rory McIlmoil at [address removed], and/or call Coal River Mountain Watch at (304) 854-2182.
