August 19th, was the national launch for the
Coal River Mountain
Wind Project in West Virginia.
Residents of the
Coal River Valley are proposing the development of a 440 Megawatt
wind farm on
Coal River Mountain as an economically viable alternative to a planned 6,000 acre - 10 square mile - Mountaintop Removal
coal mining operation. 18 valleys and 10 miles of headwater streams will be saved from mountaintop removal by this proposed
wind farm. Mountaintop removal would permanently destroy the possibility of ever using these mountains for
wind turbine development, since the best winds are at higher elevations.
This project is supported by
Coal River
Mountain Watch and the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, the Sierra
Club, Appalachian Voices, Rainforest Action Network and Co-Op America.
Those living around
Coal River Mountain are saying loud and clear that they reject Mountaintop Removal
coal
mining as an economic model, and are making the choice for clean,
renewable energy and safe, long-term green jobs for their communities.
